There, in that last sentence, “hear” is clearly the wrong spelling, and again, “corrected” should be “correct it. Another con, in my opinion, is that when I’m surfing the web and open a new page, and Dragon is on, it interrupts what I’m doing with the question asking whether I want to allow Dragon to run the page! I have to click it off before I can do anything on that page.

Now, if it did it once and I said ‘no,’ and it never did it again, that might be okay. However, every time you return to the page, or even refresh it, it stops everything to ask the same question again! Maybe there’s a way in the program to turn that off that I just haven’t found yet, but it is a pain in the butt. There is a different version of Dragon specifically for dictation. Maybe that would be a better thing as a professional writer trying to create books!

I’ll have to consider that. These days, when people are typing a mile-a-minute in a chat program or on Facebook, etc. Dragon would be perfect for them!

But if you’re living depends on getting things right in your written words, Dragon-created mistakes are an issue. See the problem with “you’re”? I’m not going to bother to fix it here. The problem with mistakes and how to correct them in Dragon is why I gave up my old version of the program. After a while, I found it was just easier for me to type and avoid most of the errors that Dragon makes. That said, Dragon does improve as it goes, they say, and it can learn from your other written material, including documents and email.

I meant to keep with Dragon 13 for a period of time I said “I’m going to keep with” in the last sentence — you see what Dragon wrote.

Anyway, I’m going to keep trying the program, because it does do some amazing things, and I sure would like to be able to just speak what I want to write down. I can see how this would be of particular benefit to anyone with a disability that keeps him from being able to type. However, the downside is still the mistakes that Dragon does make. I intend to come back after a couple more months and let you know how my learning curve, and dragons learning curve, are going.

Again, in that last sentence, you would think that the Dragon program would know that when I say “dragons learning curve”, it would recognize that the word Dragon is not plural, but should have an ‘s at the end to signify ownership of its own learning curve!

I’d give Dragon a five for how well it does understand what you’re saying. However, I knock that down to a three because of the issue of mistakes and the time and trouble it takes to correct them. A qualified recommendation on this one. It just takes too long to find and correct the mistakes! I’m faster and better just typing what I want to say to begin with. However, as I point out, for some people, Dragon may be what they’re looking for, warts and all.

In addition, I fully believe in the Company’s mission, and I expect and hope that subsequent versions will improve “listening” ability, and grammatical and spelling errors, some of which must be based on the product’s ability to spell certain things based on context of a word in the sentence being dictated.

I quit using Dragon long ago. Bottom line, it’s faster for me to write and edit the “old way” than it is to correct Dragon’s mistakes. However, there are now new versions available for significantly more money.

Later, I had lots of trouble with the reinstalling after my computer crashed not due to the speech recognition system and I upgraded my computer and operating system. Recently, due to health reasons, I needed a replacement for my usual typing and tried the built-in speech recognition software in Windows 7.

I found this extremely ineffective and so decided to try the Dragon speech recognition system once again. I simply couldn’t get the installation going successfully on my Dell laptop and emailed Dragon Systems support. Within 24 hours I received an email from them asking for more details and within hours of that I received an email response for an alternative method of installation. The instructions were very clear for the most part and worked like a charm! I found the new version to work a lot smoother than the earlier version 7.

The software interface is vastly superior and user-friendly with excellent help files. Once set, without much training the dictation works nearly flawlessly; indeed I am using the software to dictate this!

Very few errors, on some difficult words, capitalization at the beginning of sentences particularly when there is a pause in the dictation. It Would not shut down normally. I had to figure out with the help of Microsoft online help files, but once done, XP has been working nicely.

I suspect that this XP mishap was independent of Dragon software. I received a beaten up product package, with a torn off security panel area on the bottom of it, and a disk with greasy fingerprints and scratches all over it.
